As per what my Guruji – Pt. Vijay Sardeshmukh would say, this Bandish is about a conversation between two women.
Kawan means ‘which’ and Bataraiya means ‘path’.

One lady is asking the other lady – While I had gone inside my house, someone came and stole my stuff lying out. Have you seen which way he has gone?
The second woman says that I had gone out to do my own work. There are so many ‘gallis’ (narrow lanes) here; not sure in which one he has gone!

The Lyrics are

(Kaban batariya gailo mai)
(Mai ri deho batayi)
(Ithi ut mora churwa gailwa)
(Mai re deho batayi)
Word Meaning
kabanwa – means Kaun or who or stranger
Batariya/baat/- relates to path
kaban batariya – which path
gayil – gone
ithi – itne me hi – in this while only
ut – that person
Churwa gayilva- stole away
sauda- transaction
lene gayi sauda – went for a buy/sell/shopping
haatwa – market
galin – lane
Mai- here referring to may be a mother or a neighbour or mother in law
This composition in Maithili language now popularly known as the bihari language.
One female is asking/pleading the other to tell her which way did the stranger go. Just then he stole my belongings, while she had gone shopping to the market. Tell me O lady, in this time which lane did he go.

2nd line is also sung as मै घरवा गत माई, छुरवा भईलवा (when I left the house, the theft happend/ he stole my belongings)

Sadar pranam Gunijan.
